In an interview with Japan’s Famitsu magazine this week, Ubisoft executive director Alain Corre dropped some hints that his company is interested in tapping into the Japanese game market more seriously in 2010 and beyond — even floating the idea of creating a Japan-style console RPG sometime in the future. The interview, conducted to celebrate the December 3 launch of Assassin’s Creed II in Japan, featured Corre (Ubisoft’s executive director for the European, Middle East, and Asia/Pacific territories) discussing the pros and cons of the Japan market. “People often say that Japan is packed with hardcore gamers, and it’s important to understand what it is they’re looking for,” he said in translation. “Our mission is to create hit games on the same level as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
